Art to Help the Ethiopian National Committee

Wednesday, April 04, 2007

Hi, everyone. We have received an interesting invitation from the Ethiopian National Committee.

The Ethiopian National Committee is planning to raise funds for UWC selection costs and scholarships through an innovative idea: an exhibition of self portraits (including, perhaps, your self portrait!). Funds will be raised through entrance fees to the gallery and by auctioning the portraits at the end of the exhibition. They are also looking into the possibility of printing a book.

If you are interested in helping in the Ethiopian National Committee, here is what they ask you to do:

“spend some time drawing or painting a signed, self-portrait using any medium you feel comfortable with. The portrait can be in any style, traditional or modern or even collage, though it would be nice if it said something definitive about you and if possible bore at least a little resemblance to you. If you really are too busy to relax, take time and enjoy this challenge please consider even a simple sketch. To keep things simple we ask that all self-portraits are done on 'A4' size card or paper. Send your portrait to

Eyasu Abdella & Girma Tadesse,

By selecting a cross section of society; famous people, leaders of industry, government representatives, students, sports personalities, ordinary citizens, Ethiopian's and foreigners alike, we hope to draw the interest of many to the final exhibition.

The committee hopes to raise at least 30,000 birr (US$2000) through this enterprise but our dearest wish would be to raise enough cash not only to select and send a student but to fully fund a scholarship abroad. Your participation in this endeavor would be highly appreciated.”
